From the Editors

The Academy's collaborative 2017 annual meeting was an outstanding success with over 65 participants from around the country meeting in Boston before the AAMC main meeting  to discuss various issues related to the development of a communities for excellence in education and health sciences.  The program was lead by our 2017 program co- chairs Dr. Janet Corral, from  University of Colorado and Dr. Katie Huggett from the University of Vermont school of Medicine.

Our new steering committee members were introduced and include
  • Dr. Rebecca Blanchard from Baystate Health Education, Research and Scholarship Teaching Academy
  • Dr. Geoffrey Talman from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and
  • Dr. Barrett Fromme from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine Academy of Distinguish Medical Educators

The morning began with a very energized networking activity where participants met other collaborative members and discussed issues related to their own Academy's activities and shared best practices.  Following the networking activity a review of 2 outstanding research projects including Dr. Amy Sullivan, Director of education at Harvard Medical School discussed a pending publication on the Academy's Collaborative Demographics and Development and also shared preliminary data from the survey on wellness initiatives within the academies . This early data suggests while many of our Academies recognized burnout in faculty and/or students as an important issue, not many programs actually had initiatives lead by the Academy addressing this problem. Dr. Janet Corral discussed success in various Academy's and her program at the University of Colorado which won the ASPIRE award  for outstanding interprofessional faculty development this past year.

Following  these two initial activities consultation sessions were held on a variety of topics with handouts given to the participants now on line on our Academies Collaborative website http://www.academiescollaborative.com/
Topics included:
  • building the digital infrastructure for evaluating your Academy,
  • evaluation tools,
  • selection process for members,
  • re-invigorating your Academy
  • leadership skills to make your Academy succeed
  • new Academy information
  • well-being
  • motivating Academy members and engagement in activities
The morning ended with a modified Delphi crowds sourcing activity answering the question”What  can Academy's produce to support professional advancement” of educators . Finally, we received comments from Dr. David Irby regarding the ASPIRE award process and we were charged with using the time we spent together to continue collaboration on scholarly activities and advancement of our respective academy’s  support of faculty development across the country.  Many thanks to Katie, Janet, Amy and Kristin Dickerson for helping to make the session such a success.

Best regards,
