However, the content here may also be of interest to other individuals or health sciences programs with a need for continued faculty development in teaching and learning. We hope that the information here will be of relevance to educational practices in medical schools, residency and fellowship programs, nursing education, and interprofessional or affiliated health sciences education.
Why an "Academy"?
Academies for medical and health sciences education are increasing in size and number across the U.S. and internationally. While their specific missions and objectives vary, the central common focus is to advance the education mission of their school, hospital, or department. In 2001, two Academies, one at the University of California, San Francisco, and the other at Harvard Medical School, were early adopters of the Academy model; in the ensuing 15 years, an estimated additional 60 medical and health sciences schools have established formal Academies or Academy-like organizations at their institutions. And the numbers continue to grow: each year, new Academies continue to be formed at medical schools, hospitals, and allied health organizations seeking to renew or further their education mission. Academies provide a central hub to stimulate and build learning communities, to enhance the culture for education at their institutions, to provide state-of-the art faculty development in teaching and learning, to foster innovation and education scholarship, and to promote the careers of clinician educators. The Academies Collaborative is here to help individual Academies to achieve their goals and to encourage networking and collaboration among Academies in the US and internationally.

Diana B. McNeill MD, MACP

"The Academies Collaborative has served as a critical resource for those at any stage of Academy development/implementation/evaluation. I have been involved in the development of two Academies – Duke AHEAD and the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. In both cases, members of the Collaborative have been generous highlighting their best practices, providing resources and sharing ideas. I have been a member and attending the annual meeting for many years and each time I leave the meeting with new ideas and excitement about what Academies can provide to its members and health professions education!"
Alisa Nagler JD, MA, EdD
