From the Chairs
New Academies Collaborative Co-Chairs, Beth Levant (University of Kansas School of Medicine) and Andrea Berry (University of Central Florida College of Medicine) would like to thank all Academies Collaborative (AC) members for welcoming us as your new leaders. We’re excited to co-chair as we’re moving to make AC an independent non-profit organization. Beyond the work around the organization’s 501(c)3 status, our goals focus on branding to ensure our organization is recognized by our current and future members and maintaining many of the tremendous programs and resources established by our predecessors, Alisa Nagler and Shari Whicker and steering committee members (Katie Huggett, Giulia Bonaminio, Janet Corral, Barrett Fromme, Diana McNeill, Jeannine Nonaillada, Senthil Rajasekaran, and Judith Taylor-Fishwick).
Save the date for 2020, our meeting will occur on November 13, 2020 and will continue to be linked to the AAMC Learn Serve Lead conference. Beyond our annual meeting, we would like to engage you throughout the year.
How can you engage with AC?
Utilize the Academies Collaborative listserv to ask questions, seek answers, and share best practices of your Academy with colleagues! Contact Barrett Fromme MD, MHPE to join or for technical help @ hfromme@peds.bsd.uchicago.edu
Recommend a topic for a just-in-time webinar. If there is enough interest from our members, we’re happy to facilitate a discussion.
Submit an update, innovation or article to the AC newsletter. We would like to continue to highlight academies and their experiences and ideas. Email acadcollab@gmail.com with your article idea.
Consider serving on the AC Steering Committee. Over the summer we will again consider new members. This is a great way to impact the direction of the organization while gaining national recognition for your service.
If you have other ideas to grow the work of the AC, please contact us at acadcollab@gmail.com.
Academy Spotlight
In each issue, we feature one of our Academies Collaborative member organizations. This issue profiles The Fine Family Academy of Educators at EVMS.
The Fine Family Academy of Educators, at Eastern Virginia Medical School, was launched in 2019 to support and strengthen faculty teaching skills and promote educational excellence. Its’ core purpose includes to: develop educators, educational leaders and scholars across the career continuum; recognize and celebrate educators’ contributions and achievements; nurture and develop educators as a community of practice; and advance educators and education. The Academy welcomed its first members at an inauguration ceremony in September 2019. Currently two membership categories exist: Member and Master Educator and we have 19 members. In 2020 a Protégé category will be rolled out for junior faculty, residents and fellows and an Associate category for community faculty. The Academy hosted its inaugural event in the spring of 2019 with a symposium: Principles of Performance Assessment in Education. Foundations and Innovations. While still in its early stages, the Academy offers: professional development workshops; annual educational scholarship day; educational grand rounds; annual educational symposium; a peer observation program; one-on-one educational consultations, and a journal club. The Academy is overseen by its founding director, Elza Mylona, PhD, MBA who is supported by Judith Taylor-Fishwick, MSc (Assistant Director) and Kathleen Reese, MS AdEd (Coordinator). More information about the Academy can be found at www.evms.edu/academyofeducators

The Academies Collaborative is Gearing up for a Great 2020!
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Academies Collaborative Annual Meeting in Phoenix! The weather was great and the programming and networking was amazing. As we reflect on the 2019 program there were several themes identified by participants:
Facilitated table topics, quick shot presentations and academy bingo were identified as the most helpful aspects of the program by the majority of participants.
Members enjoyed the handouts and opportunity to network with other academy leaders to identify new ideas they hope to implement in the future.
Many participants would have enjoyed more time to discuss in the facilitated table topic portion of the program.
We also need to consider ways to engage new participants and ensure everyone knows about the business meeting and the purpose of that time as it was a new feature this year.
There was interest in reporting back on initiatives discussed at prior meetings to provide closure to interested members.
Given our relationship with the AAMC, several members suggested we identify other times throughout the AAMC meeting to provide time for consultations for new academies, or gathering times for members with shared interests, projects or goals to get together.
These will become central to how we think about the 2020 meeting and meeting your needs. If you have any additional suggestions, please reach out to us anytime at acadcollab@gmail.com.

We’re looking for new ideas to brand our organization. In particular, we’d like to identify a logo that best depicts the goal of our organization as well as a short tag line that will make us recognizable to new and old members alike.
Thanks for your ongoing support of the Academies Collaborative!
