From the Chair

The Academies Collaborative Steering Committee invites you and your colleagues to join us at our annual meeting at the AAMC Learn Serve Lead meeting in Austin, Texas. Please mark your calendar for Friday, November 2. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at noon.

Conference program chairs Shari A. Whicker, EdD, Med and Alisa Nagler, JD, EdD are developing an outstanding program with engaging sessions for attendees who represent existing academies as well as those whose institutions are developing or even just contemplating an academy of educators. Please feel welcome to attend no matter where your institution might be in the academy life cycle!

Still wondering about the Academies Collaborative?  The Academies Collaborative is an inclusive organization and welcomes all institutions with an academy of educators -- however defined or organized -- to join us as we examine best practices, share innovations, and undertake scholarship to better understand how academies promote the education mission at our schools and academic health centers.

I look forward to seeing you in Austin!

Kathryn N. Huggett, Ph.D.

Robert Larner, M.D. ’42 Professor in Medical Education

  • The AME from the Zucker School of Medicine has awarded $10,000 to the first recipients of The Lawrence G. Smith Fund for Innovation in Medical Education.  Faculty members were encouraged to submit medical innovation proposals that advance medical education and ultimately patient care.  The two selected proposals were:  Underserved Community Medicine Curriculum at Northwell Health-Lenox Hill Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program (PI: Dr. Soyoun Im) &  Northwell Health Human Trafficking Response Program (PI: Dr. Santhosh Paulus). Each PI was awarded $5,000 for funding
From VA Boston Healthcare System Education Academy:
  • The VA Boston Healthcare System Education Academy launched a new website for trainees and faculty:  https://www.vabostoneducation.org/ For faculty, the website contains a number of educator resources, including videos of talks from the VA Boston First Friday Faculty Development Series.  This Series, held on the first Friday of the month at 12:00PM Eastern, is open to both VA and non-VA educators.  Examples of presentation topics include “Strategies to Coach and to Provide Feedback to Colleagues,” “Teaching Trainees to Provide Culturally Competent Care to the LBGT Community” and “Multigenerational Educational Environments: Seeing It as an Asset.”  If you are interested in receiving announcements about future presentations, please email David Topor at David.Topor@va.gov.
  • The website also contains the “Growing as an Educator Curriculum” which is part of VA Boston’s LEARN (Linking Education Across Residency-training Networks) Program.  The goal of LEARN is to develop collaborations across training sites and to provide a resource for faculty at VA and non-VA medical centers to gain the skills and abilities needed to teach and to supervise.
From The Academy of Medical Educators (AME) at the University of Kansas School of Medicine:
  • The Academy of Medical Educators (AME) at the University of Kansas School of Medicine recently launched a “Medical Education Research Interest Group” (MERIG). A program of the Academy’s Scholarship and Research subcommittee, MERIG meets on a quarterly basis over the lunch hour and serves as a forum for faculty and staff to present their research in medical education. Many of the presenters have been recipients of internal grant funding for innovative teaching through the University of Kansas School of Medicine Alumni Association and the AME. Topics have included competency-based education, simulation, assessment and active learning.
  • In addition to quarterly meetings, MERIG launched a Journal Club. This 30 minute Journal Club meets every three weeks and focuses on articles related to issues pertinent to our recent curriculum transformation, as well as hot topics in the world of medical education. Articles are selected and presented by members of the AME and have provided for robust discussions. Some of the topics discussed include faculty development to increase use of active learning, illness scripts in case-based clinical training, and characteristics of multiple choice exam questions.
