From the Chair
Are you ready for Austin? The annual meeting of the Academies Collaborative is only eight weeks away. Don’t forget to register for both the Academies Collaborative meeting on Friday, November 1, and also the AAMC Learn Serve Lead meeting.
At this year’s Academies Collaborative meeting you can expect to hear practical tips and approaches from experts at academies, including: leadership topics, research development, and member engagement. Our members will also share examples and ideas for how academies can support the professional advancement of faculty and advancement processes at institutions. Finally, expect updates on the latest research from across the Academies Collaborative, plus opportunities for networking.
Remember, you are welcome to attend even if your institution does not yet have an academy and is exploring the possibilities.

The Academies Collaborative Annual Meeting is intended to support Academies at all stages - those just beginning and those that have been around for decades! This year¹s meeting will highlight best practices in areas such as Member Engagement, Evaluating Effectiveness, Gaining Institutional Support, and Offering a Range of Academy Activities. An update on Academies related research will also be presented. Come network with colleagues, learn from others, and take advantage of new opportunities for future Academy related collaboration.

Consider highlighting the great work of your Academy and adding a national presentation to your CV!
What is your Academy doing that is innovative, practical and or impactful? Would other Academy leaders benefit from knowing about it? As part our Annual Meeting on November 2 (you are currently registered for this event), we are including ‘Quick Shot’ presentations. During Quick Shots, 4 presenters will be invited to give a 5 minute presentation on a highlight of their Academy that is innovative, practical and or impactful, and then field questions or facilitate a related discussion for an additional 5 minutes. Our goal is to engage participants in active discussion about different ways in which we can all improve our academies based on what others are doing!
Interested?
If so, submit a BRIEF (~300 words or less) summary of your Academy Innovation (innovative, practice or impactful!) including the following:
Email this summary to Shari Whicker ([email protected]) and Alisa Nagler ([email protected]) by September 15!! We will let you know if your Academy innovation has been selected for presentation by Sept. 30. If your innovation is selected…NO POWERPOINT necessary. You will simply be asked to complete the brief template attached (using slightly elaborated details from your submitted summary), present for 5 minutes, and take questions for 5 minutes. That’s it! Interested? Let us know.

In each issue, we feature one of our Academies Collaborative member organizations. This issue profiles one of our newest steering committee members' academy; The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators
The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators
Director: Halina Brukner, MD

Core Missions:
- Promote excellence in teaching at the Pritzker School of Medicine.
- Support scholarship among Medical educators.
- Enhance the Pritzker curriculum by supporting, recognizing and rewarding its outstanding teachers.
- Build community among Medical educators in the Pritzker School of Medicine.
- Facilitate the creation of an environment that enhances the status of medical educators at the University of Chicago.
- Founded in 2006
- Three membership levels:
Master (lifetime appointment)
- Serve as role models who inspire others in the joy of teaching
- Evidence of scholarship/innovation in medical education
- Evidence of institutional impact through medical education
- Sustained excellence in teaching
- Recognized excellence in teaching
- Potential for continued contribution and leadership in medical education
- Significant contributions to courses, clerkships, programs
- Fellows are nominated by their Chair and voted on by the a committee of Masters of the Academy
- Masters are selected from the current Fellows by existing Masters
All fellows and masters must participate in at least one Academy program a year, including but not limited to:
- Teach in the Faculty Advancing in Medical Education (FAME) workshop series
- Serve as a trained consultant on the Teaching Consult Service
- Facilitate the Medical Education Day poster session
- Review of Medical Education Day abstracts

Reminder- Collaborative Forum
The Academies Collaborative has a forum! The Collaborative Forum is the spot for members and non-members alike to post ideas, comment on other posts, and generate discussion on various topics pertinent to academies. When in the forum, click on the Comments tab of the topic that you would like to post in. You will then be able to create your comment and, following approval by the Steering Committee, your comment will be posted. As always, please let us know your thoughts by emailing [email protected]. |
